Far from following in the footsteps of Europe and the US, the Asia-Pacific region has the potential to be the global leader for food reformulation, in order to create healthier projects for its growing, and rapidly ageing, populations.

Reformulation in all its guises came under the spotlight at our recent Healthy Ageing APAC summit in Singapore, which was organised by FoodNavigator-Asia and NutraIngredients-Asia.

A panel discussion featuring senior industry leaders discussed how consumers are increasingly demanding more nutritious products, and the health and political imperatives for taking action to reduce levels of sugar and salt, and enrich with functional ingredients.

After the debate, we spoke on camera with one of the speakers, Anke Sentko from Beneo.

In the video, she discusses why she believes reformulation is a ‘huge opportunity’ for the wider industry, and needs to play a fundamental role in improving health outcomes across the region.

She also explains why she believes Asia-Pacific has the potential to be the global leader around reformulation, both due to cultural factors around the understanding of good nutrition, and necessity because of rising cases of obesity and diabetes.

However, she also cautions that more needs to be done to be able to communicate the benefits of reformulated and functional products, especially via front-of-pack labelling.

Take a look at the video for more.
