The Australian Agricultural Company (AACo) is searching for available cattle to be processed at its new abattoir near Darwin.

According to a report on the website of broadcaster ABC, for the first time the company has publicly advertised kill space available for cows of various weight ranges at its Livingstone abattoir for September and October.

Northern abattoirs are being forced to compete with businesses in the south of the country, which, over the past few months, have lured cattle farmers with better prices. According to reports, regular truckloads of cull cows and bulls have been transported from the Northern Territory to abattoirs in the south with The Midfield Group’s abattoir at Warrnambool in Victoria one notable buyer.

AACo is offering $1.85 a kilogram for cows over 421 kilograms; $1.75/kg for cows between 391kg and 420kg and $1.50/kg for cows between 340kg and 390kg.
