Soy sauce brand Kikkoman is bringing a taste of Japanese cuisine to UK shores, with the launch of Ponzu Citrus Soy Sauce.

Kikkoman’s latest offering combines it signature naturally brewed soy sauce with Japanese condiment Ponzu – made with citrus fruits, mirin, rice vinegar and a traditional stock called dashi.

Bing-yu Lee, Kikkoman UK general manager, said there had been a rise in Japanese cuisine and demand for Japanese ingredients in the UK, making a prime target for the launch of Ponzu.

More than 80% of people asked said that they might or would definitely buy the product, claimed Lee.

‘Strong consumer interest’

“Despite lack of familiarity, our research showed strong consumer interest in Kikkoman Ponzu, and a desire to explore usage options,” said Lee.

“The biggest appeal came from the vibrant zesty aroma and citrus flavour and consumers saw usage primarily with grilled meats, in particular chicken and fish, and with a strong leaning towards salads. We will be actively promoting it as a great alternative to vinegar over traditional fish and chips.”

Kikkoman Ponzu Citrus Soy Sauce was said to have a balanced flavour of salty, sweet, tangy and sour. The product was designed for use as a pouring or dipping sauce and is available in a 250ml bottle.

“By blending Ponzu and soy, consumers can now get the great taste and flavour-enhancing benefits of both lemon and soy sauce in one bottle,” added Lee.
