Up to 30% of the world’s food supply goes to waste – around 1.3bn tonnes – delegates to the World Meat Congress were told.

Speaking in Beijing, Sealed Air’s Simon House said that within the meat sector itself, around 23% of meat went to waste globally. "Food waste means lost resources and environmental harm. Inept processes and lack of protection lead to food waste."

He said that, throughout the international meat industry, there was a drive to reduce packaging. "People want to reduce the weight and reduce their footprint, they want to transport more meat and less packaging, while reducing their carbon footprint."

Another key trend, he highlighted, was a global shift away from modified atmosphere packaging and a switch to vacuum packing.
