A UK delegation, including the country’s Prime Minister David Cameron, has travelled to China in a bid to secure a new trade deal for pigs’ trotters.

The new deal could potentially see pig trotter exports worth up to £50m for the UK. Cameron has met with Beijing authorities to make progress towards opening the Chinese market to further British exports.

Additionally, UK pork exports to China increased by 591% in the first six months of the year compared to the previous period last year.

The UK’s environment minister Owen Paterson, who was assisting Cameron on his trip, said: “Pigs’ trotters at home will often go to waste, but in China they are a real delicacy. Opening an export market for trotters worth £7.5m will be a further boost for our farming industry on top of the deals we have made on pig semen and cuts of pork last year.

“I want to press forward with this and other trade deals that will create an enduring legacy of lucrative export opportunities for British businesses.”

Meanwhile, top Northern Irish beef processor Dunbia will be taking part in the trade mission to China, represented by its joint managing director Jack Dobson.
