Ishida has partnered with Emirates Dates in the UAE to install a second multihead weigher for packing sticky dates.

The company, which own palms in Al Ain and Ras Al Khaimah, needed to find a way to increase throughput while achieving greater pack weight accuracy.

The system has replaced a manual operation and led to a near 200% increase in daily output – from seven tons to 20 tons – while product giveaway has been reduced from 3% to 1%.

The main problem was the product’s tendency to stick together in clumps, which can lead to excessive giveaway. The Ishida weigher has Teflon coated surfaces with an integrated depositing system and thermoformer.

We carried out extensive tests prior to purchasing the weigher, which proved it was the best machine for handling dates,” said Udaysingh Sawant, Emirates Dates.

The R-series 14 head weigher comes with a bucket elevator and cross head feeder to bring product to the weigher and a distribution system that deposits the product into thermoformed trays in either 2x2 or 3x2 layouts.

It can maintain speeds of 40 packs/min on 500g and 1kg packs and the user-friendly interface at the touch of a button has led to a reduction in manpower from 21 to five people.
