Indonesia sets beef import quota
Most of the frozen beef imports are prime cuts aimed for the hotel, restaurant and catering industries, while the rest are secondary cuts for the meat processing industry.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture has approved importing 92 companies, consisting of 72 companies importing frozen beef and 20 companies importing feeder cattle.
Syukur Iwantoro, director general of livestock and animal health for Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture, said imports would be monitored closely. “If there’s a beef import quota in the first half which was not used by the importing companies, the quota cannot be transferred to the second semester. If transferred, the importing companies will incur a penalty,” he explained.
He added that Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture was committed to reducing beef imports in order to achieve self-sufficiency in beef by 2014.
