Now not the time to scrap death penalty for food crimes in China - lawmaker
Now it not the time to scrap the death penalty for food safety crimes in China, a lawmaker in the country has proclaimed.

National People’s Congress deputy Fang Zhiyuan said that two kinds of crime – those that endanger people’s lives and safety, including the production and sale of harmful food, and the embezzlement of money from the public coiffure - should be the subject of capital punishment.

“These crimes cause great harm to social harmony and economic development,” said Fang.

“Showing mercy for criminal convicted of these crimes is irresponsible.”

Fang made the remark during a discussion in the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, China state media Xinhua reported.

“We don’t have to abolish the death penalty simply because some developed countries have done so,” he added.

In China in 2011, almost 300 people that violated food safety laws were handed life imprisonment or the death penalty, FoodQualityNews.com reported earlier this year.
