Nutrastar is to develop its organic and speciality foods business in an 18 month expansion plan with annual production capacity set to increase to more than 6.5m kg of organic produce.

The company said that opportunity in the organic food and produce industry in China has prompted the expansion.

Hundreds of greenhouses will be built on an area of 890,000 square metres on the company’s existing production grounds.

CEO and founder of Nutrastar, Lianyun Han said: “While the organic food and produce industry in China is quite fragmented and competitive, it is growing rapidly, as concerns about food safety continue to be an issue nationally… we hope to capitalise on this growing market demand and gain share in the organic food and produce industry.”

The expansion has strong support from the Heilongjiang provincial government and the Daging city government who will subsidise part of the plan.
