When breastfeeding is impossible, it is essential to use infant and follow-on formulae. In order to mimic the part of non-digestible oligosaccharides present in breast milk that could influence development of the intestinal microbiota early in life, prebiotic ingredients, like Actilight FOS can be added to infant formulae. This presentation aims to summarize the latest scientific findings about using FOS in infant and follow-on formulae. The regulatory status of such use is also described. As a perspective, we also present very recent studies evaluating the potential of supplementing pregnant and lactating women on the development of intestinal immune system in neonates.
