The Enjoy 7 Plus Android phone, made in partnership with Huawei, features a 5.5-inch screen and fingerprint sensor above the colonel’s image. It also comes installed with a KFC app and Sanders-based wallpaper.
The low-end Android 7 device also includes KFC’s music app, which allows song sharing at some of the 5,000 KFC restaurants spread across China. It also comes with 100,000 of the Colonel’s “K dollars”, a virtual currency used at Chinese stores.
Huawei will only manufacture 5,000 of the lucky-coloured smartphones, which went on sale at online retailer Tmall costing RMB1,099 (US$161). Due to the limited production, they are expected to become collectors items.
KFC was among the first Western food brands to arrive in China, and is now the biggest restaurant chain in the country.
The brand has been known in marketing circles to run exuberant and slightly bizarre campaigns, featuring chicken-flavoured nail polish, erotic literature, scented candles and greaseproof keyboards.
