EFSA awards €1m to research projects

Three research projects on methodology development in risk assessment have been awarded €1m by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

A total of 28 organisations from 15 European countries responded to the agency’s grant call which covered three areas in April 2016.

EFSA created thematic grants to strengthen scientific cooperation by co-funding research projects.

The winner of the first area ‘Methods and systems for the identification of emerging food risks’ was DEMETER – DEtermination of METrics of Emerging Risk led by Stichting Wageningen Research (The Netherlands).

Partners are Wageningen University (The Netherlands); University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK); Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Germany) and National Food Chain Safety Office (Hungary).

The second area ‘Integrated methodologies for the risk assessment of mycotoxin mixtures in food and feed’ was won by MYCHIF ­- Mycotoxin mixtures in food and feed.

Leading partner Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is joined by Università degli studi di Parma; National Research Council; Istituto Superiore di Sanità (all Italy); Queen’s University Belfast (UK); Universidade do Minho (Portugal) and the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (France).

The third area focuses on ‘Output-based methods for the assessment of the freedom of animal disease/infection’.

A pilot call in 2015 attracted 34 organisations from 14 countries and was awarded to INNUENDO, a cross-sectorial platform for integration of genomics in surveillance of foodborne pathogens and ENGAGE, to establish next generation sequencing ability for analysis in Europe.
