Australia and Bangladesh discuss food safety standards

Australia has provided insights into standard setting to Bangladesh which is working on its food safety system.

Luke Hartsuyker, assistant minister to the deputy Prime Minister met with Qamrul Islam, Bangladesh minister of food to share information, discuss opportunities and help support food security.

Bangladesh is establishing its national food safety system and is seeking to learn from the science and risk assessment processes of Australia’s national food standards and inspection systems. 

Hartsuyker said Australian food exports are valued around the world for their quality and reliability.

“Australian produce has earned a reputation for being clean and green, and the Bangladesh Government is eager to cooperate with us on developing their own modern and scientifically robust food standards system," ​he added,

“This particular meeting provided an important opportunity for us to share Australia’s best practice approach to food standard settings, and the assessments that support those standards, to ensure consumers have confidence in the safety of the food they enjoy.

“I appreciate the minister and his representatives taking the time to meet with us and I look forward to seeing our ongoing cooperation helping to support the development of a strong food safety system for one of our important agricultural markets.”

The meeting also discussed Bangladesh’s interest in technical support to strengthen laboratory capacity in the country and providing food safety training.

The delegation also met with Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and the New South Wales Food Authority, to gain an overview of inspection systems, laboratory analysis and consumer education.
