2. An order from on high… Xi Jinping has demanded that China builds brands
China’s leaders have acknowledged the need to rebalance the country’s economy so that it is led by consumption instead of investment by making this official policy. The president, Xi Jinping, in August ordered state-owned companies to figure out how to build their brands, quoting comments originally made by Deng Xiaoping, a predecessor, in 1992: "We should have our own flagship products and establish our own world-renowned brands, or we will be bullied by others". The president usually gets what he demands, meaning that Chinese state-owned enterprises are now engaged in a flurry of activity as they try to formulate branding strategies in response to this policy edict.
