Australia sees live exports surge

Australian live exports increased significantly in May, according to the latest data from Meat and Livestock Australia.

Live cattle exports were up 49% year-on-year for the month to 82,761 head. This was driven by an 84% increase in live cattle shipments to Indonesia, which accounted for the majority of exports at 41,830 head. However, shipments to the Philippines and Vietnam were also up considerably – by 292% and 458% year-on-year, respectively.

Live sheep exports were up 48% year-on-year compared to May 2012 at 245,330 head. The majority went to Jordan and Kuwait, which took 89,334 head and 68,188 head respectively. However, shipments to Malaysia and Turkey were down almost 62% and 100% respectively.

Australian live goat exports fell 26% year-on-year to 5,023 head, driven by a 44% drop in exports to primary market Malaysia.
