Walmart has named Greg Foran as president and CEO of its China operation, four months after the previous CEO quit over an organic pork scandal.

Foran has been senior vice-president for Walmart International since he joined the company in October 2011. He built his retail career in New Zealand and Australia and was the head of Woolworths’ supermarket division before he started his job at Walmart.

He said: “I’m honoured to have the privilege to lead our business in China and serve our customers there. China is a very important market for Walmart and I look forward to working with our 100,000 associates.”

Scott Price, president and CEO of Walmart Asia and interim CEO for Walmart China, added: “With his distinguished career in retail, Greg is uniquely qualified to lead our growing business in China. I’m very pleased he is bringing his talents to help us continue Walmart’s expansion there and enhance our efforts to help Chinese customers save money so that they can live better.”

In October 2011, Walmart China’s previous CEO Ed Chan resigned “for personal reasons”, after the Chinese authorities made several arrests and forced the company to close a dozen of its stores over allegations that it was selling regular pork under an ‘organic’ label.
