India’s agricultural production is strong
Sharad Pawar, minister for agriculture and food processing, said that the sector is seeing healthy growth.
Food grain production has reached a record 241.6m tonnes and the country’s production of wheat, pulses and oilseeds has been its highest yet, he said.
He added that the overall farm output had seen an impressive growth rate of 7.7% in the last quarter of 2010-11.
Pawar noted that India will need to scale up production further to ensure food security as demand for food grain is set to increase.
He pointed out that India’s strategy will be to combine high yielding varieties, hybrids and efficient farm equipment to enhance production, at no increased costs.
He also proposed a new programme for agricultural mechanisation as availability of farm labour is squeezed.
