Food Ingredients Asia opens in Kuala Lumpur next week, attracting
food makers from all over southeast Asia and beyond.

Previously held in Bangkok and Singapore, this year's show will be held at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur, taking up a space of about 5,500 sq metres from 27-29 September. The organisers have targeted companies from the whole of the South East Asia region including Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma and Laos. Malaysia itself has a wide range of food ingredients that appeal to the Asian palate. It is the world's leading exporter of pepper and also supplies large quantities of spices such as clove, coriander, turmeric, fennel, lemon grass, anise, cumin and cinnamon. The country is also the world's third largest producer of cocoa and cocoa products like cocoa butter, cocoa paste/liquor, cocoa cake and cocoa powder. At the same time, imports in Malaysia are expected to increase to more than US$4 billion by 2010. As in other countries, health and well-being are major trends in developing new food products, including developing low-cholesterol cooking oil using red palm olein, substituting palm-based coconut milk powder as a low-cholesterol substitute for traditional coconut milk and substituting cholesterol-free palm oil for other fats. Other health foods are also showing fantastic growth in Malaysia, products such as cheese, soy milk, snack bars, and breakfast cereals and recently new fortified dairy products like high calcium cheese, high calcium milk and soy milk, and vitamin-enriched condensed milk. Snack foods are expanding too in the region: extruded snacks are the most popular followed by potato crisps, prawn crackers, and products based around nuts and corn. Manufacturers and suppliers of food ingredients from the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, USA, Turkey, Italy, Belgium and Canada are expected to attend. Last year, Fi Asia which was held in Bangkok, attracted 8,246 industry professionals. External links to companies or organisations mentioned in thisstory: FiAsia
