Omega-sterol ingredient for diabetics received Australian patent

Israeli ingredients company, Enzymotec, has been granted a patent in Australia for its omega-3 sterol formulation, intended for use in functional foods for diabetics.

'Omega-Sterols' is composed of naturally occurring hybrids of phytosterol and omega-3 and the patent is based on clinical data showing healthy levels of blood triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol in humans as well as effectiveness in blood lipid control.

Dr Sigalit Zchut, director of R&D at Enzymotec, said: “Omega-sterols were also clinically proven to be better than standard sterol-esters since they do not hinder the absorption of certain vitamins, such as vitamin E. Additionally, there is an initial indication that it may reduce C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and blood pressure as well.”
