Tetra Pak Thailand was awarded Green Company of the Year and Nestlé was recognised as a CSR Advocate at the Asia Corporate Excellence & Sustainability Awards (ACES) 2014 organised by MORS Group, this week.

Tetra Pak Thailand has been promoting beverage carton recycling in Thailand through schools, temples and communities since 2,000 and in 2008 it made the initiative nationwide through a recycling campaign on TV.

Princess Pa Foundation

One of the initiatives it was recognised for at ACES was a the Green Roof Project organised by the Princess Pa Foundation involving the Thai Red Cross Society and retailer, Big C Supercenter, after a village in Ban Salaeng, Phayao, Thailand, was destroyed by a hailstorm last year.

The village was the recipient of 1,500 green roof sheets thanks to disaster relief provided by the Green Roof Project repairing public buildings, such as schools, temples and multi-purpose community buildings.

"We are pleased and honoured to be recognised for our sustainability commitment through our social and environmental initiatives, in particular our Green Roof Project for Princess Pa Foundation,” said Henrik Hauggaard, MD, Tetra Pak Thailand.

We work with our customers and various stakeholders to protect the environment by using paper which is a renewable material as our main material, developing carton collection and recycling systems, and promoting the benefits of sustainability to consumers.

The Green Roof Project for Princess Pa Foundation, called on public participation to send consumed cartons to be recycled into roof sheets for those in need. It’s a perfect example of how we can extend the meaning of protection beyond food safety to embrace our employees, the communities in which we operate and the environment."

Victims of natural disaster

From June 2010 till August 2014, 84 million used cartons were recycled to make over 40,000 roof sheets which have been presented to the Foundation and installed in various places as well as the houses of victims of natural disaster in over 20 provinces in Thailand.

The ACES Awards recognize successful companies and individuals in Asia across two main domains; leadership and corporate social responsibility. MORS Group’s Research Unit work with industry experts to handpick candidates and the winners were invited to a gala at the Fairmont Singapore on November 26.

Other Tetra Pak programmes include a government-led school milk programme with Tetra Laval Group in Myanmar, where it delivers packaged ready-to-drink, long-life UHT milk to approximately 45,000 children in primary schools in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay.

The milk is currently processed and packed in Thailand but, the plan is for manufacturers in Myanmar to deliver packaging milk supplied by local dairy farmers.
