Egypt has signed two agreements with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) including helping to create the Egyptian Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

The first deal would see UNIDO help set up EFSA which was established with the Food Safety Authority Act, according to a government information portal.

It was inked by Giovanna Ceglie, director of the regional office of UNIDO and Hussein Mansour, head of national food safety agency-management unit at the Trade and Industry Ministry.

The second signed by Ceglie and Ater Hannoura, board chairman of the Egyptian Countryside Development Company would see the UN collaborate on the 1.5m feddans project.

The UNIDO Regional office in Cairo was established in 1999 in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

UNIDO is harmonizing food safety standards in countries of the League of Arab States (LAS) with funding by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida).

The Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO) and Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) are leading the initiative with national ministries and organizations responsible for food safety.
