US agricultural processor Archer Daniels Midland has opened the first phase of its integrated food manufacturing complex in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin.

The sweetener-manufacturing portion is now ready to begin production at ADM’s first wholly owned food-ingredient production facility in China.

When the whole complex is complete next year, it will also produce soluble dietary fibre, for which demand is growing, as it is for sweeteners, said Ismael Roig, the company’s Asia-Pacific president.

ADM is expanding in high-growth countries like China as part of its mission to improve returns and reduce earnings volatility. Products manufactured at the plant will be shipped locally and overseas.

The Tianjin site’s ready access to rail and water transportation, on the Yellow Sea, and to raw-material supplies will allow it to integrate with ADM’s global network,” said Roig.

ADM began operations in China in 1995, when the company acquired an animal feed premix plant in Dalian, in the country’s northeast.

In recent years, it has grown to become one of the top exporters of grain to Asia, and the company markets an extensive range of food ingredients and animal feeds and feed premixes through its network of sales offices located throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
