BrewDog sets out Aussie brewery plans

Scottish craft brewer BrewDog has announced its plans to build a brewery and taproom in Australia.

The company is looking at two areas on the country’s east coast: the harbor city of Newcastle in New South Wales; and the Queensland capital Brisbane.

“We love the vibe of these cities and think either would be perfect for a BrewDog brewery/brewpub,” says the brewery as it announced the plans.

The brewery has hired Australian Zarah Prior to head up the brewery project, and is looking for ‘an existing industrial site to redevelop with a built up facility of 2,000 - 4,000m²; or a plot of land able to accommodate a build of that size with room for expansion’.

Its other criteria include a great local community promoting urban renewal, and ‘something unique that will make our brewery and taproom truly awesome’.

“Building a brewery in Australia is a huge undertaking for us, but we love the passion of the people there and want nothing more than to reward them for looking out for us from the other side of the world. Super-fresh BrewDog beer brewed in their backyard.”

BrewDog was founded in 2007 by James Watt and Martin Dickie, after they decided they were ‘bored of the industrially brewed lagers and stuffy ales that dominated the UK beer market’.

Describing itself as an ‘irreverent craft brewer’, the business now employs more than 600 people globally, exports to 55 countries, and operates 44 bars. It is also known for its Equity for Punks crowdfunding projects.

It has breweries in Ellon, Scotland; and Columbus, Ohio. Its flagship brew, Punk IPA, is the number one craft beer in UK supermarkets.
