The Ministry of Finance of the Sri Lankan government has said that the taxes imposed on certain food items in 2011 have been renewed to protect the local producers.

According to the ministry, the taxes imposed on imported sugar, dhal, garlic, peas, vegetables oil and imported fish have been renewed via a government notification last week.

Under the notification, the ministry said that the tax on vegetable oil has increased to protect the local coconut oil industry.

The ministry also noted that the price of these items has come down globally and the increase of duty will not lead to an increase in local prices.
