China this week launched a registration system to record the variety and origin of imported food. The measure comes as part of the government’s bid to establish a tracking system for food imports to improve safety.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) now requires food exporters or agents overseas, along with consignees in China, to make a registration of all imported food through a file management system on its website.
The body requires that food exporters and importers are named, and they are to be given a registration serial number for the file system when they apply for quality inspection and quarantine at customs houses across China.
The consignees of imported food are also asked to record information concerning its import and sale onto the system.
