India battling cattle losses due to foot and mouth disease

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has said that India is losing US$4bn on annual basis due to the foot and mouth disease (FMD) in cattle and livestock in the country.

A senior ICAR official at a conference in New Delhi said the losses are a result of lower milk production because of FMD. Also, there is a ban on the export of livestock products of animals infected with FMD, which is adding to the losses in the country.

The official pointed out that under the country's 11th Five-Year Plan, the government had allotted US$260m to fight FMD, but has increased that to almost US$900m in the 12th Five-Year Plan that covers 2012 to 2017.
