The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has opened up market opportunities for three food producers from Trincomalee, a port city in the Eastern province of Sri Lanka, by helping them gain a food certification.

The three producers received certificates for good manufacturing practices (GMPs) under the Sri Lanka Standards Code for food hygiene after attending a USAID-supported seminar.

This certification will enable the producers to access new markets.

James F Bednar, mission director for USAID Sri Lanka said: “The aim of this initiative was to encourage small and medium enterprise (SME) certification by clarifying its benefits and explaining how it is acquired.”

USAID noted that many SMEs in Sri Lanka think that certification is beyond their reach and too costly.
