Herring caviar omega-3 form wins Oz-NZ distribution

Norwegian herring-sourced omega-3 specialist Arctic Nutrition has inked a distribution deal in Australia and New Zealand with Pathway International.

Arctic’s herring caviar derived, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)-loaded omega-3 form was launched last year in Europe and North America with Novastell coming onboard as the European distributor after the company exhibited at Vitafoods in Geneva and then Supply Side West in Las Vegas later in the year.

Manufactured in Arctic’s Norwegian GMP-certified facility and sourced from Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified fisheries, the ingredient is priced at the premium end of the sector, between high-end fish oils and krill.

CEO Hogne Hallaråker said last year the company was developing in vivo protocols to back the efficacy of the ingredient, although DHA and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) already have approved health claims in many parts of the world for heart and infant development.

The Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) has said it is too early to tell if herring caviar may deliver more efficacious omega-3 and phospholipid loads than other marine sources.

“Arctic´s products and IP package fits perfectly within our business model and represents an excellent addition to our portfolio of partners,” said Wayne Coote, managing director of Pathway International.

“The herring caviar products are probably the most exciting innovation we have seen so far this year in the omega-3 space.”

Anders-Morten Blindheim, chief marketing officer at Arctic Nutrition, commented: “Pathway International’s technical and regulatory expertise, exceptional customer service and warehousing capabilities will be crucial in providing the level of service our customers will require to successfully enter the market.”

Pathway International focuses on delivering ingredients to the complementary medicine, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, veterinary and food and beverage industries.
